The Limits of General Relativity
Einstein's theory excels at explaining the universe above quantum scales and has led to predictions of black holes, gravitational lensing, and the Big Bang. However, it encounters significant challenges in two major areas:
1. **Quantum Scales:** When scaled down to quantum levels, general relativity's equations become ineffective, transforming into mathematical gibberish.
2. **Dark Matter and Dark Energy:** To make our current cosmological models work, scientists had to introduce dark matter and dark energy, which together constitute most of the universe's mass-energy content. Despite their crucial role, these entities remain undetected and cannot fully explain the varying expansion rates of the universe.
Proposing a Cosmic Tweak
In light of these issues, Afshordi and his colleagues proposed a straightforward yet revolutionary idea: adjust Einstein's theory at different distance scales. Specifically, they suggest that the universal constant of gravitation might differ on cosmological scales compared to smaller ones like those within our solar system or galaxy.
This proposed adjustment, dubbed the "cosmic glitch," could explain patterns in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) — the radiation left over from the Big Bang — and the structure and expansion of the universe. According to Afshordi, these modifications reveal that cosmic gravity is approximately 1% weaker than the gravity experienced on a galactic or solar system level.
Implications of the Cosmic Glitch
If this hypothesis holds true, it could fundamentally change our understanding of the universe. The concept that the laws of gravity are not uniform across all scales challenges one of the core assumptions of modern physics. This could lead to new insights into the nature of quantum gravity, the early universe, and even the behavior of black holes.
