5 Reasons Why Travel Is Beneficial to Your Mental Health

By: April Carson

Travel is good for your physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. The joy of experiencing something new can do wonders to stimulate you on a deep level that goes beyond the mundane tasks in life we all tend towards--it gives us an opportunity to explore our world through different perspectives; this expands how much information there is out there about people from other cultures or backgrounds whose experiences may differ greatly than ours.

It's important to be mentally and physically healthy in order to live our best lives. Traveling does not only bring joy; it also gives us the chance to learn more about ourselves by stepping outside of our comfort zones, which allows for new opportunities and experiences that we never knew would happen so soon. By getting out there and seeing things with your own eyes, you can determine if you'd like to pursue that specific opportunity or experience in the future, or avoid it altogether.

A great example of this is Billy Carson's most recent episode, "Bio-Hack Your Best Life," which you can view on YouTube. In this episode, Billy and Elizabeth Hoekstra discuss their recent trip to Egypt and Dubai. They make some suggestions about why it's so crucial to be mentally, physically, and financially prepared before traveling abroad.

Billy and Elizabeth discuss the ways travel has changed them for the better in this episode I have included below. The couple explains the benefits of travel and why everyone should take a trip at least once in their lives. They explain how their adventures have brought them closer together, increased their sense of independence, and improved creativity.

Traveling helps you live a healthier lifestyle by encouraging you to eat better food and get more exercise. Many people travel because they want to see the world and experience new things outside of their comfort zone. According to research, this is a good idea because it can help reduce the risk of depression and anxiety disorders.

While on their travels, people are more inclined to meet new friends and see new things. The change of scenery can help people become more motivated and look at life differently.

Here are five ways traveling makes your mind happy and healthy based on research:

  1. It's a fantastic stress reliever. "The stress of work and daily demands might divert us away from what we believe to be genuinely significant and fascinating," according on San Francisco-based clinical psychologist and author Dr. Tamara McClintock Greenberg, who notes that taking a break from the everyday routine is critical for your mind to relax, recharge, and find inspiration again.

  2. You'll feel more connected to the world around you. "Traveling can also positively affect your mood, as it stimulates new experiences and greater appreciation of other cultures," notes Dr. Judith J. Wurtman, a nutritionist and author of The Serotonin Power Diet , which discusses how diet influences serotonin levels in our brains.

  3. Traveling teaches you about yourself. You'll discover what kind of personality type you are in this authentic, unfamiliar setting. "You might find out that you're a thrill seeker, or an adventurer," says Dr. Greenberg. "Or maybe it makes you realize that you prefer to stay in your bubble." And this newfound understanding about yourself could be a positive thing.

  4. It makes you happier and more satisfied. Aside from the obvious fact that you don't have to go to work (and can genuinely eat pizza for breakfast), traveling allows you to take a break from your routine. The new events and experiences help rewire your brain, which boosts your mood and self-confidence.

  5. It sharpens your mental resilience. Going somewhere where you're both thrilled and frightened can help you toughen up mentally and emotionally. When you're placed in an unfamiliar environment, with new individuals, you must adapt and learn to a life that's outside of your comfort zone. This makes you more flexible, patient, and emotionally resilient.
