11-YEAR-OLD GETS PHYSICS DEGREE, SAYS HE’LL USE IT TO ATTAIN TECHNOLOGICAL IMMORTALITY

By: April Carson

A Belgian 11-year-old student just received his bachelor's degree in physics from the University of Antwerp, according to local newspaper De Telegraaf — and with the highest distinction.

“I don't particularly mind if I'm the youngest,” Laurent Simons told the newspaper, as translated by Newsweek. “All I care about is acquiring knowledge for me.”

It's a tremendous achievement, and while Simons says he'll live forever by transforming himself into a cyborg, the real trick is how he did it.

Leo Neels, the University of Antwerp's dean, told Newsweek Simons completed on average more than three hours of supervised study per day. That included lectures and laboratory work in addition to his own research on atomic physics. He attended university classes twice a week since he was 10 years old, Neels explained.

It appears that Simons has a strategy in place.

“This is the first piece in my plan to replace body parts with mechanical ones,” Simons told De Telegraaf. His objective is "immortality," he said.

“I'd want to be able to replace as many body parts as possible with mechanical components,” he continued. “I've plotted a route that will take me there. It's like a big jigsaw puzzle in my mind.'

Simons is next looking to study quantum physics in order to start on his huge challenge - a far cry from the jigsaw puzzles being constructed by children his age.

“Two things are essential in a study like this: gaining knowledge and putting it to use,” Simons told the newspaper. “I'd want to collaborate with the world's greatest professors and look into their brains to figure out how they think.”

He said he would settle for nothing less than becoming a leading expert in his field, and is now honing his abilities as a researcher by carrying out small experiments. “I want to earn my title as an inventor and be known as the person who comes up with really sensational ideas that bring happiness to people,” he said.

Simon is only in the beginning of his education.

A spokesperson for the University of Antwerp said, "He also took some classes in the master's program this year. He'll begin his master's degree formally after the summer."
